Two-time Human Kinetics author Brent Cuthbertson passed away Tuesday, October 28, following a heart attack. The death of the healthy, active 54-year-old comes as a great shock to all who have come to know him.
Brent was a gifted, passionate educator and leader. With 30-plus years of experience as a wilderness educator and guide, he was well equipped to impart knowledge as an Associate Professor in the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks, and Tourism at Lakehead University.
The qualities that made him a beloved professor also made Brent a valued scholar and author. He wrote and edited two books for Human Kinetics with his colleague Tim O’Connell: Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure, which was released in 2009, and Leadership in Recreation and Leisure Services, which was released this fall. Brent’s thoughtfulness and ability to create personal connections made him easy to collaborate with. Like his students, Brent’s editors found that a professional relationship was inevitably personal; work was a vehicle for reflection, and reflection a vehicle for work.
