USOC award completes clean sweep for Candrea's U.S. squad
Six months after leading his team to gold at the 2004 Olympics, coach Mike Candrea received one more reason to celebrate when the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) named the U.S. women's softball squad "Team of the Year." Last August, the contributor to The Softball Coaching Bible led Team USA to a 9-game sweep that marked the United States' third softball gold medal in Olympic competition.

Few things are more impressive than watching a human being lift 1,000 pounds. The rate at which new strength bests are attained is almost scary. It seems like only a few years ago when the first 1,000-pound squat and 700-pound bench press were recorded. More than 1,100 pounds and 900 pounds are the records in those lifts. In fact, it took nearly 20 years to improve the bench press from the mid-600 pounds to mid-750 pounds; but it took less than two years to see the improvement from 800 to 900 pounds. How are athletes able to reach such extreme levels of strength?
