News & Information

HK Author Part of Phil Mickelson's Winning Team

In Augusta on April 11, Phil Mickelson etched a spot for himself in Masters history when he shot 31 on the back nine-the lowest final-round back nine by a winner since Jack Nicklaus shot 30 in 1986. He broke his 0-for-42 dry spell at golf's Majors and donned the green jacket for the first time in his career.

"I'm very excited about the four majors this year, much more than I've ever been," Mickelson said. "I feel I've got the game now that I can play a major championship test without getting in nearly as much trouble." One part of Mickelson's equation for success is his training with strength coach Sean Cochran.

Training Tips

In-Season Speed Improvement from Sports Speed, 3rd Ed., by George Dintiman and Bob Ward

Normal practice sessions during the in-season period in most sports are not long enough to bring about great improvement in most basic training areas. Coaches may also have difficulty finding enough time and deciding where to place the key maintenance programs that will prevent athletes from losing much of their off-season gains.

Cutting and Turning from Athletic Body in Balance by Gray Cook

Most field and court sports require cutting and turning. The way you use your legs—specifically, your lunge movement patterns—will determine your ability to lower your center of gravity and decelerate and accelerate.
