Break After An Opponent's Score from Coaching Basketball Successfully, 2nd Ed., by Morgan Wootten
The fast break is our first option in any offense at any time during the game. My teams have had great success running the primary break, which is created from steals, rebounds, blocked shots, made field goals, or made free throws. We've emphasized the running style of play because the break
- is the best way to create easy scoring opportunities and to control the tempo of the game,
- is the first and often most effective way of beating full or halfcourt pressure defenses, and
- works well against a zone defense if your players push the ball up the floor and get a scoring opportunity before the zone has time to set up.
The Coach from The Softball Coaching Bible by the NFCA
After coaching well over 1,000 softball games and numerous players from T-ball to Olympic level, I've come to the conclusion that two of the most important attributes of a coach are the ability to teach fundamentals and the ability to motivate.Although there are many great players, not every great player is a great coach. On the other hand, I know some very good coaches who were not exceptionally good players. Why is this? I believe it is simply the ability to teach fundamentals. Being able to break a skill down into learning parts and then transferring that knowledge to players through a series of progressive drills is an ability that all successful coaches have. Coaches gain that knowledge through a variety of ways. Some coaches were very good players and were taught by good coaches. Others use resources such as videos, camps, clinics, and seminars. I believe any coach who is willing to learn can learn.
